Windows 8 is an operating system developed by Microsoft, released in October 2012 as the successor to Windows 7. It introduced significant changes, particularly a redesigned user interface optimized for touchscreens, reflecting the growing popularity of tablets and smartphones. The most notable feature is the Start screen, which replaced the traditional Start menu with a grid of colorful tiles that provide quick access to apps and live information like weather updates and social media notifications.

Windows 8 also introduced the Windows Store, a marketplace for downloading apps, similar to app stores on mobile platforms. Other key features included improved support for cloud services, faster startup times due to the new hybrid boot system, and better integration with Microsoft’s ecosystem, including services like SkyDrive (now OneDrive).

However, the removal of familiar features like the Start menu and a steeper learning curve led to mixed reception. Microsoft later released Windows 8.1 in 2013, addressing many user complaints by reintroducing some of the traditional desktop elements and providing more customization options for the Start screen. Despite its innovations, Windows 8 is often seen as a transitional product towards later versions like Windows 10.
